Did you know that you can almost always find discount flights that are significantly lower than the "special" bereavement fares offered by airlines?

This page gives you an easy seven-step way to lower your cost on bereavement airfares—even if you have to travel today.

And because these discount airfares are not restricted to bereavement, you won't need to submit medical information to the airline.

7 steps to substantial savings

• First, research available online airfares. We assume you’ve also checked several airlines to find out the cost of their bereavement flights.

  Enter your preferred dates and airports to run a search. Hotwire will list regular fares with specific flight times, which are often lower than fares on other sites.
  
  
• For maximum savings, check out Hotwire's heavily discounted fares:
  

  Hotwire Limited Rate: (when available) departs between 6:00 a.m. and 10 p.m., unless Hotwire tells you otherwise prior to booking.
  
  With Hotwire Limited Rate fares to the U.S. or Canada, you'll travel nonstop or with just one connection, unless Hotwire tells you otherwise prior to booking.
  
  If traveling within the U.S. and Canada, connections are no longer than 3 hours maximum, with 80% being under 90 minutes.
  
  If traveling today, you'll have at least 5.5 hours between completing your booking and departure for North American destinations or at least 7.5 hours for international ones.

• When you decide and pay, note that as soon as you authorize your credit card payment, your booking becomes non-refundable, and if you've booked a Hotwire Limited Rate, no changes are permitted even for a fee.
  
  
• Print out your itinerary AND take it with you to the airport. If you don’t have a printer, write out all flight numbers, times, and other booking information.
  
  
• Call your airline to select a seat. Same-day seat assignments are handled at the airport.
  
  
• Check the airline's website (or call) to find out their check-in time requirements, and allowable sizes and contents for checked and carry-on luggage.
  
  Note that there are two time limits—one for the check-in counter and another for the departure gate. These vary by airline. If you’re not at the gate on time—usually 10 to 30 minutes prior—your seat can be given to a standby passenger, even though you have a boarding pass.
  

Tip: If you're in a rush, consider taking advantage of this tip. Some, but not all, airlines allow you to stand by for earlier flights on the same day as your reservation. (Your reservation is held until it becomes clear that you will make it on the standby flight.) Also, if your itinerary requires a flight connection, standing by sometimes enables you to grab a nonstop flight.
